In most countries around the world, old buildings are valued. There's something about the history, originality, and charm of an old house that sometimes makes it more valuable than new construction. But in Japan, the opposite is almost always preferred. Newly built houses are the most sought after in a real estate market where homes rarely sell, and the obsession with demolishing and rebuilding is both a cultural and a security issue, leaving 30-year-old houses in a market with virtually no value.
